CULTURAL OCCUPATIONS BY SEX AND AGE

OVERVIEW

According to the 2011 Census, of all persons employed in cultural occupations nationally, 35% (109,851) resided in New South Wales. This was 4% of all employed persons in New South Wales. Of those cultural occupations with more than 50 workers, New South Wales had the largest proportion of broadcast transmitter operators (60%), followed by media producers (excluding video) (57%), art directors (film, television or stage), television equipment operators (both 56%), television presenters and production assistants (film, television, radio or stage) (both 55%). In contrast, only 15% of park rangers in Australia resided in New South Wales.

The highest employing cultural occupations were graphic designers (9,513 persons or 9%), ministers of religion (5,501 or 5%) and architects (5,189 or 5%). These cultural occupations also had the largest proportions of employed persons nationally.

EMPLOYMENT BY SEX

Of persons employed in cultural occupations in New South Wales, 58,665 (53%) were male and 51,190 (47%) were female. There were also more males than females employed in cultural occupations nationally.

The cultural occupations with the largest proportions of males were director of photography (93%), sound technician (93%), camera operator (film, television or video) (92%), printing machinist (91%) and musical instrument maker or repairer (90%). The same cultural occupations had the largest proportion of males nationally.

The cultural occupations with the largest proportion of females were make-up artist (94%), dance teacher (private tuition) (89%), library assistant, visual merchandiser (both 86%) and fashion designer (85%). The same cultural occupations had the largest proportion of females nationally.

Antique dealer, program director and multimedia designer were the most gender neutral cultural occupations in New South Wales, with less than two percent separating the sexes.

EMPLOYMENT BY AGE

Persons aged 15 to 24 years made up 10% of persons employed in cultural occupations in New South Wales, which was consistent with the national average. The cultural occupations with the largest number of persons aged 15 to 24 years were design workers (3,243) and other arts support workers (1,700). These two occupations represented 44% of persons aged 15 to 24 years employed in cultural occupations in New South Wales, compared with 42% nationally.

The cultural occupations with the largest number of persons aged 55 years and over in New South Wales were minister of religion (1,789), architect (1,165), librarian (1,093), music teacher (private tuition) (854) and library assistant (722). These were the same cultural occupations with the largest number of persons aged 55 years and over nationally.

Persons aged 55 years and over accounted for 17% of those employed in cultural occupations, similar to the national average. The cultural occupations with the largest proportion of persons aged 55 years and over were civil celebrant (66%), antique dealer (58%), potter or ceramic artist and historian (both 51%). The same cultural occupations had the largest proportion of persons aged 55 years and over nationally.

The cultural occupations with the smallest proportion of persons aged 55 years and over were dancers or choreographers, make-up artists and web developers (3%). This was also consistent with the national average.
